Announcing Youth Conservation Congress

Director Marc Miller, Illinois Department of Natural Resources, invites high school youth (ages 14-17) to participate in the first Youth Conservation Congress at Brookfield Zoo on June 27.  Students will learn about conservation issues and careers in Illinois.  Activities will be hands on and the agenda will focus on Community Conservation, Wildlife Management and Invasive Species.  Students will develop a personal action plan to incorporate conservation activities into their everyday lives.

You must register in advance and the first 100 students will be accepted.  On June 27th, check-in will open at 9:30 AM and the program will run from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.  The event is FREE and lunch will be provided by the Illinois Sportsmen’s Caucus.  Registration is available here http://www.dnr.state.il.us/nrab/ycc.htm.

Parents or guardians will not be allowed to participate in the activities, but family members are invited to enjoy a day at Brookfield Zoo while their students participate in the Youth Conservation Congress.

2010 Endangered Species Day Art Contest

The 2010 Endangered Species Day Art Contest; organized by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Endangered Species Coalition, the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and the Ogden Museum of Southern Art/ University of New Orleans; is open to students in grades K through 12. 

Judging will take place in four categories, K-Grade 2, Grades 3-6, Grades 7-9, Grades 10-12, with one national winner being chosen from the semi-finalists in these four categories.  The nationwide Endangered Species Day Art contest provides students with an opportunity to learn about endangered species and express their knowledge and support through artwork.

Endangered Species Day is a celebration of our nation’s wildlife and wild places.  Started in 2006 by the United States Congress, Endangered Species Day is an opportunity to learn about endangered species. The art contest is an integral part of the fifth annual national Endangered Species Day, May 21, 2010.  The contest’s winner will be honored with their name engraved on a special trophy designed by a gifted young artist, Meredith Graf of New Orleans, LA and will also be recognized at a reception in Washington, D.C. in May, 2010.

An excellent webguide on "Poster Presentations - Designing Effective Posters" provides an inventory of print and Internet-based resources for guidance and instruction for the presentation of scientific and technical information in the form of a poster presentation. See:
