Proposals Invited for ConocoPhillips Spirit of Conservation Migratory Bird Program

The Spirit of Conservation Migratory Bird Program is a partnership between ConocoPhillips and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation to provide grants for bird habitat conservation projects in areas where ConocoPhillips has an operating presence.

To be eligible for funding, a project must benefit migratory birds and their habitats. The program supports projects that protect, restore, or manage habitats for migratory birds; benefit declining, threatened, or endangered species; generate measurable outcomes; and provide opportunities for employee participation and volunteerism. Special consideration will be given to projects that focus on American Oystercatcher, Red Knot, Gunnison Sage-grouse, and waterfowl and shorebirds in areas where ConocoPhillips has an operating presence.

Eligible applicants include nonprofit 501(c) organizations, educational institutions, and local and state units of governments.

A total of $600,000 in grants is available. Typical grant awards will range from $25,000 to $200,000 each.

I-Share Standardized Universal Borrowing Policies Effective August 4, 2010

On August 4, 2010, CARLI implemented changes to standardize the policies that apply to I-Share Universal Borrowing (UB) activity. “Universal Borrowing” is the Voyager module that supports interlibrary resource sharing among the 76 I-Share libraries. Any time an I-Share library patron requests or borrows an item from an I-Share library other than their “home” library, Universal Borrowing policies are invoked.

The common policies that have been implemented provide all UB-eligible borrowers a standard 4-week UB loan period for the items that I-Share libraries make available through UB. Up to three 4-week renewals are allowed unless a UB item is recalled or considered lost. UB overdue notices will be generated on a common schedule and will include a “courtesy” notice sent to the patron 7 days in advance of a due date to encourage their prompt attention to these materials. The standard policies also include a common 29-day timeframe for overdue UB items to be considered lost.

National Ban on Lead-based Ammunition, Fishing Tackle Sought to End Wildlife Poisoning

A coalition of conservation, hunting and veterinary groups today filed a formal petition with the Environmental Protection Agency requesting a ban on the use of toxic lead in hunting ammunition and fishing tackle. Major efforts to reduce lead exposure to people have greatly reduced the amount of lead in the environment, but toxic lead is still a widespread killer in the wild, harming bald eagles, trumpeter swans, endangered California condors and other wildlife.
